In our latest video tutorials Phil Cook, Simply Rhino’s Senior Rhino trainer, looks at Industrial and Product Design Detailing with Rhino 8.

Image is of two 3D modelled parts that would ultimately fit together to make a single piece. They are separated to demonstrate the detailing on the internal areas of the parts. We can see the insides of both flat pieces which are both green in colour.

When we consider Rhino and its use in Industrial Design and Product Design, we often think about creating and developing exterior shape and form, managing complex surface transitions and very much concerning ourselves with the visual ‘appearance’ of a product.

Internal features for manufacture and assembly

However, it’s very often the case that designers need to concern themselves with interior features that are very often unseen, to describe, even if only in outline detail, how parts can be manufactured and assembled. Adding this type of detailing isn’t just the preserve of engineers using engineering solid modellers, it can be done in Rhino too.

We see the cross section of a 3d modelled object. The item is coloured green and the edges that are exposed and closest to us are marked in red.

Adding Internal Detailing in Rhino3D

The assumption for these videos is that we are dealing with the final design and we’ve spoken to the toolmaker/moulder and have agreed the draft and other moulding details. Phil then starts our Rhino tutorial by adding internal detailing to an injection moulded assembly, working onwards from the external or ‘A’ surfaces.

Shelling, Offsetting & Creating a clamshell lip

In the first video of the two, features such as shelling, offsetting and creating a clamshell lip feature are explored. Phil investigates using both Solid and Surface metaphors to create detailing using Rhino 8.

Adding Internal Ribs and Fixing Bosses

In the second video of the two we take a look at using Rhino when adding internal ribs and fixing bosses to our agreed design. Again, both Solid and Surface metaphors are explored.

Introducing the final video in our ‘Rhino for SketchUp Users’ series in which we look at Rhino 8’s solid modelling tools, some of which are new to this latest version of Rhino software and others improved in Rhino v8.

Ideal for SketchUp users that are new to Rhino

This beginner level tutorial, exploring how Rhino can be used like SketchUp, is for you if you work in Architecture, or related industries, and are familiar with SketchUp but are new to Rhino. The video continues on from the other videos in this short series, these are PushPull Modelling Explored in Rhino 7 and Solid Modelling Tools for Architecture.

New and improved tools in Rhino 8

This video covers the creation of the building we used in our recent ’Sun and Sky Architectural Exterior Rendering’ video where we looked at creating an interior architectural visual in Rhino 8 using the built-in Sun and Sky system and Rhino’s Raytrace render engine. Within this new Rhino modelling tutorial we look at how the new and improved features of Rhino v8 further enhance and simplify the process of creating quick solid models and massing studies.

Rhino 8 Toolset Enhancements

Rhino 8 has an enhanced toolset that Simply Rhino’s senior trainer, Phil Cook, introduces to us in the video. These new tools include:

  • PushPull
  • Inset Face
  • Auto CPlane
  • Improvements to the Gumball

In our latest video tutorial Phil Cook, Simply Rhino’s Senior Rhino trainer, looks at rendering an architectural interior with Rhino 8.

Rendering with Rhino 8, for beginners

This beginner level video looks at creating an interior architectural visual in Rhino 8 using the built-in Sun and Sky system and Rhino’s Raytrace render engine.

How to apply library and custom materials

The video commences by introducing a method of setting up the interior perspective view by controlling Rhino’s camera widget before moving on to look at applying both library and custom materials to scene elements.

Rhino 8 Sun and Sky Render – Connecting the sun and sky

Phil then looks at setting up the Sun as a source of direct illumination and replacing the default environment with the Physical Sky model in order that the sun and sky are connected.

Raytrace Render Engine

The final render is then created with the Raytrace render engine and Phil outlines how to use post effects to improve the exposure, and how to export a transparent background in order that the colour-ramp sky can be easily replaced with a photographic image in subsequent editing.

Rhino 8 – SubD Crease Video Tutorial https://rhino3d.co.uk/news/rhino-8-subd-crease-video-tutorial/ Tue, 12 Dec 2023 18:03:02 +0000 https://rhino3d.co.uk/?p=2842 Find out about SubD Crease, another new command in Rhino 8. SubD Crease introduces weighted creases to Rhino, allowing for soft, defined forms to be added to a SubD form without increasing complexity.

SubD Crease is one of the Simply Rhino teams favourite new commands in Rhino 8.

3D CAD drawing of a concept car. The purpose of the image is to show a new software command feature in Rhino 8 software called SubD Crease. The image we see is of a silver coloured roadster style sports car pointing towards us.

What is SubD Crease?

SubD Crease introduces weighted creases to Rhino, these allow for soft, defined transitions to be added to a SubD form without increasing complexity.

Close up CAD drawing of a car wheel arch modelled in Rhino3D software. We see a silver coloured car and we are shown measurements of degrees on the wheel arch which demonstrate a command in use by the person modelling the car.

What’s in our SubD Crease Video Tutorial?

In this Simply Rhino video Phil Cook, our Senior Rhino trainer, starts by explaining the new command on a simple example and comparing this to the older Rhino 7 workflow, before moving on to a practical example of an automotive sketch model. Here, Phil demonstrates adding and controlling character lines to the model and how the new SubD Crease command allows for easy iteration at the design stage. There’s also some general tips on SubD layout and creating a custom display mode.

ShrinkWrap will work with any combination of surfaces, solids, meshes or SubD's. Watch our video and learn more.

Rhino 8 is here and one of the great new features of this latest version of Rhino software is ShrinkWrap.

What is ShrinkWrap in Rhino 8?

The ShrinkWrap command creates a watertight mesh from geometry that is less than optimal. Any combination of surfaces, solids, meshes or SubD’s – whether they are open or closed – can be used. ShrinkWrap will also create meshes directly from a point cloud.

Image shows 3 versions of a rabbit CAD model. The first version shows a scan of the rabbit using point cloud data, the second shows the data being processed using the ShrinkWrap command in Rhino 8, the final rabbit is the resulting image.

What is ShrinkWrap ideal for?

ShrinkWrap is the tool you could reach for within Rhino 8 to create:

  • Meshes for 3D printing
  • A solid union mesh from multiple objects
  • A solid mesh from 3D scan data fragments
  • Meshes without internal self-intersections
  • Offset meshes for shelling
  • Meshes from point clouds when reverse engineering
  • Valid closed meshes from broken or often hard-to-repair geometry

ShrinkWrap Video Tutorial

In this Simply Rhino video Phil Cook starts by looking at the basics of the ShrinkWrap command before looking at two specific examples both of which are based on real-life customer examples.
